Trump announces denuclearization discussions with Xi Jinping

At the summit of the leaders of China and the United States, the issue of nuclear disarmament was discussed, including involving the Russian Federation in this process. This was announced on May 15 by US President Donald Trump.

"We talked about this — denuclearization. I always talk about it. With Russia and with China. This issue was discussed <...> and the involvement of Russia in this. But it's a very good idea," he said.

Trump also clarified that it was not about a new nuclear deterrence agreement. According to him, he discussed with Chinese President Xi Jinping the need for nuclear disarmament only in words, while no one made promises to anyone. The American leader stressed that the leaders will still have the opportunity to discuss this issue this year, especially if Xi Jinping arrives at the G20 summit in Miami.

On April 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that countries that comply with the provisions of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) have the right to use peaceful nuclear energy. Putin said in the same statement that Russia expects the NPT conference to be productive and contribute to the nuclear non-proliferation regime. He noted that Russia is one of the leaders in the field of nuclear energy.

A day earlier, Russia and Belarus reaffirmed their commitment to the NPT and called for achieving a nuclear-weapon-free and safe world for all. The document notes that the parties reaffirm their obligations under the NPT, including preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, advancing towards general and complete disarmament, and ensuring access to the benefits of peaceful atomism.
