In Russia, 56% of residents are overweight, while 22-26% are obese. This was announced on May 13 by Viktor Tutelyan, chief freelance nutritionist at the Ministry of Health, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, during the forum "National Health is the basis of Russia's Prosperity."

Tutelyan also named the main reasons for the increase in the level of obesity among citizens. According to him, this is caused by a high calorie diet, a lack of vitamins and minerals, low consumption of vegetables and fruits, as well as excessive salt intake.

"A healthy diet can prevent 80% of heart attacks, strokes and diabetes," said the nutritionist.

At the same time, from 30 to 50% of the causes of such diseases are associated with eating disorders. A nutritionist at the Ministry of Health pointed out that the country's residents consume sugar four times the recommended amount, and saturated fat 1.5–2 times more.
