Residents of Russia will be able to observe the total solar eclipse on August 12 from Murmansk. This was announced on May 13 by astronomer Alexander Kamyshnikov.

"It is important to understand that a total solar eclipse is not just a "Moon obscured the Sun." This is a very special experience. It gets dark during the day, stars appear, and the sun's corona flashes around the black disk of the Moon — a pearly white glow that cannot be seen in any other way," he shared.

It is also indicated that the duration of the total phase of the solar eclipse will reach 2 minutes and 18 seconds. According to the astronomer, Murmansk will become one of the best cities in the Russian Federation for observing this astronomical phenomenon, where the Sun's coverage will be about 80%. The full phase of the eclipse can also be observed at the northernmost point of the Taimyr Peninsula, the expert added to the 56orb Internet portal.

According to the material, the Sun will be on the horizon in St. Petersburg, which will create a beautiful but difficult-to-see picture. And in Moscow, it will be almost impossible to see it even with a telescope, adds "Газета.Ru ".

In February, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS) announced that the first of two solar eclipses of 2026 had begun on Earth.
