India has banned sugar exports until the end of September 2026.
Indian authorities have imposed a ban on sugar exports until September 30, 2026. The corresponding order was published on May 14 by the General Directorate of Foreign Trade of the republic.
"The policy regarding the export of sugar, including raw sugar, white sugar and refined sugar, has been changed from the "limited" category to the "prohibited" category with immediate effect and effect until September 30, 2026 or until further orders are received," the notification posted on the agency's website says.
Previously, sugar shipments abroad were allowed only if there was a special license. As noted, the ban is aimed at increasing the supply of products on the domestic market and restraining prices against the background of inflationary risks and uncertainty related to the situation in the Middle East.
At the same time, the restrictions will not affect sugar exports to the European Union and the United States, which are carried out under special agreements. These agreements allow us to supply certain volumes of products at reduced or zero customs duties.
On May 13, the Cabinet of Ministers of India approved a program worth 375 billion rupees ($3.92 billion) for the development of coal gasification projects to reduce dependence on imported fuels. The program was adopted against the background of the impact of the crisis in the Middle East on gas imports to India.
