When planning a trip abroad, Russians should take into account the risk of being detained for extradition to the United States from third countries, Grigory Lukyantsev, head of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation on Human Rights at the Russian Foreign Ministry, warned on May 14.

"Many countries, not only in the European Union (EU), but also in a broader context, have certain extradition obligations. All this should be taken into account when assessing the risks that people may face when traveling abroad," RIA Novosti quoted the diplomat as saying.

The Russian Foreign Ministry does not impose prohibitions, but can only recommend not to visit certain countries if tourists there may have problems in relations with the US or EU authorities, Lukyantsev stressed. In particular, the list of countries with an increased risk of detention at the request of the United States includes European and Latin American countries, Australia, Armenia, Canada, Israel, South Korea, Morocco, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand, Fiji, Sri Lanka and Liberia.

The Russian Embassy in Nicosia reported on May 11 that the District court of the Cypriot province of Larnaca granted the US request for the extradition of Russian citizen Serazhudin Actulaev, who is accused of cyber fraud.
