Guided nutrition: successful healthy lifestyle practices want to turn into a national system
56% of Russians are currently overweight, and 22-26% are obese, Viktor Tutelyan, chief freelance nutritionist at the Ministry of Health, said at the forum "National Health — the basis of Russia's prosperity." According to him, eating disorders are one of the main causes of diseases. And the president of the National Health League, Leo Bokeria, said that it is necessary to form a national system of healthy life that would be widespread in all areas — at home, at work and at school. And she must take into account preventive measures, including proper nutrition. What else was discussed at the forum — in the Izvestia article.
Healthy lifestyle Promotion
The main task of saving the people is to prevent diseases and promote a healthy lifestyle, President of the National Health League, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, cardiac surgeon Leo Bokeria said at the forum "National Health is the basis of Russia's prosperity", which is being held in Moscow from May 13 to 15.
— We need a new generation system. The system is the main victory. The care and activity of life that a person receives through prevention, exercise, proper nutrition and attention to oneself is the healthcare of the future," said Leo Bokeria.
He noted that health care should extend to all areas of human life, including school, work, and be accessible "at the place of residence." Successful practices should be used to form a national system of healthy living, he stressed.
Oksana Drapkina, director of the NMC of Therapy and Preventive Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, noted that work is currently underway to increase the healthy life expectancy of the population, and named five factors that influence it.
"It's not smoking, not abusing alcohol, not overdoing it, [eating] 400-500 grams of vegetables and fruits a day, and walking for at least an hour a day or 30 minutes of more intense physical activity," she said.
In addition, the expert called for improving the medical literacy of the population.
— It is necessary to create conditions for everyone to receive reliable information about their health, — Oksana Drapkina said.
And Senator, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy Daria Lantratova said that it is important to increase public awareness of the treatment options that are already available.
"Unfortunately, people don't always know about them," she said.
In particular, she cited the example of such projects as Oncopatrol, which aims to detect cancer early, and the Country's Sanitary Shield, aimed at protecting the population from biological threats, infectious diseases and epidemics.
Thanks to the activities of the federal project "Health for Everyone", the proportion of citizens leading a healthy lifestyle increased from 9.1% in 2023 to 11% in 2026. The goal is to increase this figure to 13% in 2030, Oksana Drapkina said.
To do this, the expert noted, it is necessary to create health-friendly "green" zones, pedestrian and bike paths, "health trails", playgrounds and sports grounds, including outdoor exercise equipment, parks and squares, stadiums, swimming pools, skating rinks, sports and recreation complexes and fitness centers in the regions.
The development of fast food is an alarming signal
Oksana Drapkina drew attention to the growing number of fast food outlets in Russia, as well as alcohol and tobacco stores.
— Over the past 15 years, fast food has been steadily gaining ground. This is a very disturbing signal for us. An increase in the number of fast food outlets, cafes, restaurants, canteens, affects the prevalence of the problem of overweight and obesity, the expert warned.
The reasons for the increase in the level of obesity among the Russian population are high calorie intake, insufficient intake of vitamins and minerals, vegetables and fruits, as well as excessive use of salt, stated Viktor Tutelyan, scientific director of the Federal Research Center for Nutrition and Biotechnology, chief freelance nutritionist at the Ministry of Health of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to him, "30-50% of the causes of diseases are eating disorders." The expert said that Russians consume sugar four times more than the norm, and saturated fats 1.5–2 times.
As a result, 56% of the Russian population is overweight, and 22-26% are obese, Viktor Tutelyan said.
"A healthy diet can prevent 80% of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes,— he said.
Sergey Chernogaev, Chairman of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia, believes that it is necessary to create conditions for occupational safety, prevention of socially dangerous illnesses, medical examinations, child care and mass sports.
