Cosmetologist explained the connection between metabolic health and appearance
Age-related facial changes depend not only on natural aging and gravity, but also on the state of metabolism. Ekaterina Vasilyeva, Candidate of Medical Sciences, dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, trichologist, founder and chief physician of Artleo Clinic, told Izvestia about this on May 16.
"With insulin resistance, the body produces an increased amount of insulin, which triggers processes that can noticeably change appearance. Excess glucose promotes the formation of glycation end products that damage collagen and elastin. As a result, the skin loses its elasticity, becomes less elastic, and the contours of the face become less clear," the expert explained.
In addition, insulin stimulates the accumulation of adipose tissue. This can be manifested by the appearance of a second chin, an increase in the volume of the cheeks and a general puffiness of the face. At the same time, in some areas, for example around the eyes, on the contrary, volume loss may occur, which creates a pronounced imbalance.
The expert also noted that high levels of insulin affect hormonal balance. In women, this can lead to coarsening of facial features, enlarged pores and acne, while in men, it can lead to increased hair loss and changes in facial proportions.
The doctor called chronic low-intensity inflammation an equally significant factor, which may be associated with excess sugar in the diet, stress, sleep disorders and an imbalance of the intestinal microbiota. As Vasilyeva explained, inflammatory processes destroy the collagen framework of the skin, provoke fluid retention and increase tissue swelling. Over time, this can lead to ptosis, the appearance of flares, deepening of the nasolacrimal sulcus and a change in the oval of the face.
The specialist emphasized that insulin resistance and inflammation reinforce each other, forming a vicious circle that accelerates age-related changes. For prevention, the expert recommends that you first adjust your diet: reduce your intake of sugar, simple carbohydrates, and alcohol, and increase the proportion of greens, berries, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
Physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress reduction also play an important role. According to the doctor, it is advisable to go to bed before 23:00, since it is at this time that important hormonal recovery processes are launched.
Vasilyeva said on April 27 that peptides are not a universal solution for skin rejuvenation and require a comprehensive approach to care. To achieve a noticeable result, it is necessary to combine external care with hardware and injection procedures. This allows you to affect the deeper layers of the skin and maintain cell activity.
