In the first four months of this year, slightly more than 5.4 thousand passenger cars with a mileage of over 160 hp were imported to Russia. This is eight times less than in January-April last year, when the volume of imports of such machines amounted to 44.1 thousand units. Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, told about this on May 12 in his Telegram channel.

At the same time, the total volume of imports of used passenger cars increased by almost 18% during this period — from 105 thousand to 123.7 thousand units.

"It can be stated that after the introduction of the "protective" waste collection bar, the import structure has changed dramatically. Last year, cars with a mileage of over 160 hp accounted for almost 42% of imports, but now only 4.5%," the analyst noted.

On April 9, the director of Autostat explained that the high growth in registrations of new cars of German and Japanese brands in Russia at the beginning of 2026 was due to the effect of a low base and the fear that it would soon become much more difficult to purchase such cars.

As the specialist explained, sales growth was influenced by the new rules for calculating scrap collection, according to which, since December last year, individuals can import cars with an engine power of no more than 160 hp for personal use at discounted rates.
