The gardener spoke about the protection of the crop in the frost

Andrey Tumanov, Chairman of the Moscow Horticultural Union, told how to protect crops during frosts.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Tuesday, May 12, the specialist noted that the main danger for summer residents in the Moscow region remains frosts, which are possible until mid-June. At the same time, according to him, cold-resistant crops like carrots, beets, onions and cabbage are not afraid of cold weather.

The specialist advises to plant heat-loving plants in greenhouses and additionally cover them, for example, with plastic bottles. Tumanov noted that early planting usually allows you to get a richer and tastier harvest. The expert also spoke about special automatic openers for greenhouses that independently open windows and doors at high temperatures.

On May 11, Pyotr Biryukov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Communal Services and Landscaping, announced that specialists had completed work on planting viola seedlings in the capital's flower gardens. It is worth starting with an inspection of the site after the winter: check the trees and shrubs, remove broken and dry branches, remove last year's foliage and debris

In early May, horticulturist Ekaterina Kosolapova advised postponing the planting of tender crops. For example, "summer workers" in the middle zone are usually planted in the middle of May, and a cold snap can negatively affect their resilience, notes 360.ru .

At the same time, Tumanov said that work at the cottage in May should begin with soil cultivation. He urged not to whitewash trees, not to burn bonfires and not to overwork.

In April, horticulture expert Olga Platonova advised covering plants overnight in case of frost. According to her, there is also a method that summer residents use to protect plants from the cold — a smoke screen.
