The NATO member states should increase the volume of the defense industry in order to implement a policy of deterrence. This was announced on May 12 by the Secretary General of the alliance Mark Rutte at a press conference in Montenegro.

"NATO countries should expand defense production. The alliance is committed to strengthening the industrial base on both sides of the Atlantic in order to maintain defense and pursue a policy of deterrence," Rutte said, the recording is available on the alliance's website.

He stressed that neither the European nor the American defense industrial complexes are yet able to produce enough weapons to cover the needs of Brussels and Washington.

Bloomberg reported on May 9 that the United States' European NATO allies fear that Washington will not limit itself to withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany and will continue to reduce its contingent in the region. According to the agency's interlocutors, diplomats from the alliance countries suggest that Trump may announce the withdrawal of the military from Italy and a reduction in the presence in Spain.

On April 2, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin announced that NATO was continuing its targeted preparations for war. The countries of the North Atlantic Alliance bordering Belarus have increased their military spending 4-5 times and do not plan to stop there.
