The doctor named the most common mistakes when using sunscreens.
Sunscreens should be used daily, not only on the beach, but also in the city. Even when traveling by car, the skin is exposed to UVA rays, which penetrate through the glass and promote photo-aging. Natalia Mikhailova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, founder of the network of aesthetic medicine clinics Reforma, told Izvestia on May 14.
According to the expert, in summer, the skin is confronted not only with intense ultraviolet radiation, but also with heat, increased sweating, dehydration and oxidative stress. In this regard, care should be based on three key principles: protection, hydration and antioxidant support.
"One of the most common mistakes is using SPF only during rest, insufficient amount of applied product and lack of regular updating," Mikhailova explained.
For urban conditions, the specialist recommends choosing products with an SPF of at least 30, and on sunny days — SPF 50+. When relaxing by the sea, only water-resistant formulas with a high level of protection should be used. After cosmetic procedures, it is permissible to use special products with SPF 85, which help reduce the risk of irritation and pigmentation.
According to Mikhailova, a high-quality sunscreen should provide protection from both UVA and UVB rays, as well as contain antioxidants and components that prevent photoaging. Among the most effective, she identified niacinamide, vitamin C, ferulic acid, and vitamin E.
Special attention should be paid to moisturizing the skin in summer. The doctor recommends using products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea and squalane. In addition, creams with pre- and probiotics are useful, which help maintain the skin's microbiome and increase its resistance to external stimuli.
The specialist also warned against the uncontrolled use of active ingredients during the period of solar activity. Retinol, according to her, is acceptable in summer only with evening use and mandatory combination with daytime protection SPF 50+. Acids can also be used, but in mild forms and low concentrations.
The expert also spoke about thermal water, noting that when it evaporates, it can increase skin dehydration. As a more effective alternative, she recommends moisturizing mistes with hyaluronic acid, panthenol, aloe or centella.
Pediatric dermatologist Valeria Bognacheva told Izvestia on April 29 that children's skin requires especially careful care, but some actions that have become familiar to many parents may, on the contrary, worsen its condition. The doctor attributed frequent washing with aggressive products, insufficient skin hydration, overheating, wearing tight or too warm clothes, and using unsuitable diapers to risk factors.
