Starmer called the restoration of ties with the EU a new course for Britain

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that the new Labour government intends to restore relations with the European Union (EU) and return the country "to the center of Europe" after years of tension with Brussels. He announced this at a press conference on May 11.

"This Labour government will be determined by restoring our relations with Europe, returning Britain to the center of Europe so that we are stronger economically, stronger in trade, stronger in defense — in everything," the politician said.

According to him, the new course will be presented at the upcoming EU summit. Starmer stressed that the previous government was associated with the destruction of relations between London and Brussels, while the current authorities intend to focus on strengthening cooperation with European countries.

The prime minister also acknowledged the difficult results of the recent elections for the Labor Party and said that he understands the disappointment of some Britons both with the state of the country and his own work.

At the same time, Starmer defended the cabinet's foreign policy, saying that London had avoided being drawn into a conflict with Iran, despite pressure from the opposition.

On May 2, Starmer already stated the need for a rapprochement between the EU and the UK. The Prime Minister noted that the world has entered a period of serious upheavals, including the conflict in Iran and the ongoing situation in Ukraine, which has an impact on the country's economy. He stressed that London does not intend to participate in the war with Iran, pointing out that this is not in line with national interests.
