Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is not satisfied with the current leadership of the European Union (EU) and Germany due to his lack of aggressive rhetoric towards Moscow. This was announced on May 10 by Dmitry Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.

According to the MP, Schroeder remains one of the few European politicians who consistently advocate for the settlement of differences. That is why Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed his candidacy as a thoughtful mediator capable of representing the interests of the West in the current situation.

"But precisely because Schroeder does not look like a hawkish man today who would like to bring relations between Russia and the EU to a final impasse, he does not suit those who today determine the policy of Germany itself and the European Union as a whole. They themselves see the future of relations between Russia and the EU differently, having taken a course to aggravate relations, and are not ready to give up on this," Novikov said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

On May 9, Putin named Schroeder as Europe's preferred negotiator for contacts with Moscow. Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, added on May 7 that attitudes towards establishing a diplomatic dialogue with the Russian side may change in Europe.

German radio station Deutschlandfunk reported on May 10 that Germany rejected Putin's attempt to use Schroeder as an intermediary between Russia and Ukraine.
