Finland pointed to the desperate need of the EU for Russian energy resources
The European Union (EU) needs to resume energy purchases from the Russian Federation in order to avoid an energy crisis. This was stated on May 10 by Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish national Conservative Freedom Alliance party.
"Regardless of the sanctions imposed, the EU is in desperate need of energy supplies from Russia. It would be wise to stop considering yourself more moral than others and start buying more energy from the Russian Federation against the background of the crisis," he wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
On May 7, Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of Russia for Investment and Economic cooperation with Foreign countries, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), drew attention to the fact that the current economic crisis in the EU countries was a direct result of the refusal to supply Russian energy resources.
He also stressed that the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Diplomacy Kaya Kallas, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are responsible for the wrong decisions and the crisis.
In early April, Mema noted that the refusal of EU countries from Russian oil and gas is an act of European self-murder. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on April 13 that the association was paying a high price not for its dependence on foreign energy, but for its betrayal of its own interests.
The head of the Italian oil company Eni, Claudio Descalzi, said on April 12 that the EU should suspend the ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). According to the head of the company, the issue of fuel supplies needs to be reviewed, as alternative sources will not be able to provide the necessary volumes and stability of the industry.
On April 24, Zakharova, commenting on the EU's position on Russian energy resources, recalled an anecdote about mice that eat cactus. She called the main characteristic of the 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions statements that the EU has started working on the 21st package. In her opinion, this is a "theater of the absurd."
