Orban will step down as Hungarian Prime Minister on May 9.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban leaves his post on May 9. He will be replaced by the leader of the centrist Tisa party, Peter Magyar.

At the first meeting of the new parliament, Agnes Forsthoffer, Deputy Chairman of the Tisa party that won the election, was elected Speaker of the National Assembly. During a secret ballot, 193 deputies supported her candidacy, 2 opposed it. Forsthoffer took the oath of office as the new chairman of the country's highest legislative body, broadcast live by national television companies.

Forsthoffer joined Tisa in September 2025 and was one of Magyar's three deputies. Prior to that, she was involved in the tourism and hotel business in her hometown of Balatonfüred. In 1998, at the age of 18, she won the title of "Beauty of Anna's Ball" at a popular competition.

The deputies will also have to elect Magyar as prime minister. He will replace Orban, who is leaving for the opposition after 16 years of uninterrupted rule. In the April 12 elections, Tisa won 141 out of 199 seats, while Orban's FIDESZ party and its partners won 52 seats. The parliament intends to approve the structure of the new government (16 ministries, 5 more) and extend the state of emergency due to the war in Ukraine. The voting will take place according to an expedited procedure without preliminary debates.
