The countries of the European Union (EU) at an informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the association in Cyprus on May 27-28 will discuss the possibilities of negotiations with Russia, including the conditions of Europe to the Russian Federation. This was announced on May 8 by a diplomatic source in Brussels.
"The first attempt to consider the very possibility of starting negotiations with Russia will be made by the EU foreign ministers at the Hymnich (informal meetings of the bloc's foreign ministers. — Ed.), which will be held on May 27-28 in Cyprus," he told TASS.
It is specified that practical solutions should not be expected following the meeting, the dialogue will continue at the meeting of the foreign ministers on June 15, and then at the next EU summit on June 18-19. Among the possible points of Brussels' demands to Russia, the source called an "immediate and long-term cease-fire."
Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted on May 6 that the Russian side is ready for effective negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and does not abandon them.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said on May 7 that in order for the trilateral peace talks on Ukraine to resume again, the Kiev authorities need to take one serious step, and they understand this themselves. He recalled that the last round of trilateral talks was held in Geneva in February.
On May 8, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington's efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine had reached an "impasse." Rubio clarified that the US administration is ready to act as an intermediary if such steps prove to be productive.
