Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with permanent members of the Security Council on Friday, May 8. During the meeting, measures to ensure the safety of civil aviation were discussed, as well as the restoration of normal operation of airports in the south of the country.

Opening the meeting, the head of state called Kiev's actions another act of terrorism. The strikes on the Rostov center could have a direct impact on flight safety.

"This could certainly have an impact on the safety of civil aircraft. Fortunately, no tragic events occurred as a result of the highly professional work of our dispatchers," Putin stressed.

Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev reported that on Friday, May 8, from 4:15 a.m. to 5:45 a.m., three strikes were recorded at the facility. The entire staff of the center was evacuated to the bomb shelter in a timely manner, thus avoiding casualties.

As a result of the incident, 13 airfields were closed in the Rostov region, including Sochi, Volgograd, Mineralnye Vody, Grozny and Krasnodar. Flight services were temporarily transferred to airfield control centers. Engineers from Almaz-Antey Concern and Rostec State Corporation have already started assessing the state of the systems.

From 13:00 on May 8, air traffic with previously closed airfields was partially resumed. The full volume of traffic in the region is planned to be restored within two to three days. According to Saveliev, alternative routes by buses and trains have been organized for passengers.

"All passengers have been notified, work at the airport is carried out systematically with passengers, there are no comments or questions. Passengers are sympathetic to the current situation," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

At the end of the meeting, the President congratulated the members of the Security Council on the upcoming Victory Day. He stressed that Moscow is in constant dialogue with partners in the anti-Hitler coalition, including China and India, to preserve the historical truth about the Great Patriotic War.

"We are constantly keeping this issue at a high level of attention, and in dialogue with our colleagues and friends in the People's Republic of China, India, and other countries of the anti—Hitler coalition," the president said.

Vladimir Putin also mentioned a recent telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which the leaders recalled the joint struggle against Nazism. The Head of State added that a number of foreign leaders had already arrived in Russia to participate in the celebrations on May 9.
