An invasion of mosquitoes is expected in Moscow in late May and early June due to favorable wintering conditions this year. This was announced on May 8 by Professor Mikhail Gordeev, Head of the Department of General Biology and Bioecology at the State University of Education.

"The mass development of mosquitoes is most affected by rainy weather, as they need water for reproduction. Or a snowy winter. There was a lot of snow and plenty of water in the spring this year. Eggs can accumulate over the years, but when many temporary reservoirs appear in the lowlands in the spring and the water floods the eggs of forest mosquitoes (genus Aedes), they begin to develop. So, judging by the weather conditions, there may be quite a lot of mosquitoes," he said.

According to him, the largest number of mosquitoes is expected in areas with high humidity and a large number of reservoirs. In particular, such territories include the east of the Moscow region and the Meshcherskaya lowland, as well as the Solnechnogorsk district.

Gordeev noted that the first mosquitoes have already appeared, and the peak flight of forest mosquitoes is likely to occur in late May or early June and will last about two to three weeks.

In addition, a mass flight of malaria mosquitoes is expected in late June and early July. The specialist clarified that, despite the name, there is no danger of malaria spreading in the capital region.

Alexander Lukashev, virologist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Vector-Borne Diseases named after Marcinovsky Sechenov University, said on April 28 that the bites of some mosquitoes can pose a threat and lead to infection with diseases such as dirofilariasis and West Nile fever. According to him, outbreaks of West Nile fever are possible throughout the country, including in Moscow and other metropolitan areas.
