The Latvian Foreign Ministry summoned Dmitry Kasatkin, Charge d'affaires of Russia in the republic, and handed him a note of protest over the downing of Ukrainian drones (UAVs) on the territory of the Baltic Republic. This was announced on May 7 by the press service of the department.

The day before, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian drones flying through Latvia tried to attack civilian targets in the St. Petersburg area. At the same time, the drones were tracked down by means of electronic intelligence and air defense systems of the Aerospace Forces. It is noted that shortly after that, five of the six detected drones disappeared from radar near the city of Rezekne in eastern Latvia. The remaining one was shot down in the sky over Russia.

A release on the Latvian Foreign Ministry's website states that the conflict in Ukraine "creates risks of security incidents throughout the region."
