- Bild announced the intention of the German Interior Ministry to expand the powers of the special services
The German Interior Ministry plans to expand the powers of the country's special services, as well as intelligence. This was reported on May 6 by the Bild newspaper, citing German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
"I want to turn our intelligence service into a real intelligence agency," Dobrindt is quoted as saying in the material.
The purpose of the reform, as specified in the publication, is to make intelligence agencies more effective and allow them not only to collect data, but also to respond more actively to hybrid threats, including espionage, sabotage and cyber attacks.
It is noted that agents will be able to neutralize cyber threats from abroad, including through overloading enemy networks with digital requests. In addition, according to the newspaper, the reform may allow interference in the work of drones and military aircraft of opponents.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Steenergaard said on May 5 that a new civilian foreign intelligence service would be created in the country, which should begin work in January 2027. According to the minister, the new structure, the Swedish Foreign Intelligence Service (UND), will be comparable to the British MI6.
