The states of the European Union (EU) do not want Ukraine to ever become a member of the union. This was stated by British diplomat Ian Proud.

"The European Union does not want Ukraine to join the EU in the near future. The loan of €90 billion is literally a payment for them to remain outside the union," he said in a message to X (ex. Twitter).

The Financial Times newspaper reported on May 1 that tension between the European Union and Ukraine is growing amid Kiev's demands to speed up the process of joining the union. According to the FT, relations between the leaders of the European Union and Ukraine have noticeably cooled due to Kiev's insistence on accelerated European integration. According to the source, at the European Council summit in Cyprus, the Ukrainian delegation was made clear that the accession process could not be accelerated politically.
