The only Eternal Flame in the Baltic States was extinguished in Latvian Daugavpils
The last Eternal Flame in the Baltic countries was extinguished at the memorial to Soviet soldiers in Latvian Daugavpils. This was announced on May 6 by Estonian activist Maxim Revva.
"There was an Eternal Flame burning in Daugavpils, the only one that remained in the Baltic States. It's not lit now. It has been banned since about March," RIA Novosti quoted Revva as saying.
According to the activist, the official version of the authorities is to close the memorial due to technical problems. But Revva expressed suspicion that the motivation of the Lithuanian government is rather political.
On April 2, the Russian Embassy in Estonia reported that employees of the Estonian Military Museum destroyed monuments in honor of Soviet sailors, soldiers and officers who liberated the republic from Nazi invaders at the Tallinn military Cemetery.
On April 9, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation held a demarche to the Charge d'affaires of Estonia in Russia, Jana Vanamelder, in connection with the desecration of military graves at the Tallinn Military Cemetery. In March, representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry had already declared the inadmissibility of desecrating the tombstones of Soviet servicemen, but Tallinn not only did not draw the necessary conclusions, but also cynically continued to lead the situation to further deterioration, the ministry said.
