A dermatologist assessed the risk of infection in the pool through a beard
A thick beard in men and the presence of body hair do not pose an epidemiological threat to pool visitors, provided that basic hygiene and normal disinfection of the water are observed. This was reported by dermatologist and cosmetologist Tatiana Egorova in an interview with Izvestia.
The specialist explained that the main function of the swimming cap is not related to protection from infections, but is used to prevent hair from entering the water and clogging the filtration systems of the pool.
"Men with a thick beard are more likely to be uncomfortable in the pool. And it is possible that they may have, for example, seborrheic dermatitis, because the skin does not dry well under the cover of a beard. But men with beards themselves won't bring any infection there," she said.
Dermatologist Egorova noted that in the absence of care, only household pollution is possible, but not infectious risks for other visitors. The level of hygiene habits directly affects the condition of the skin and hair.
According to the doctor, there is no fundamental difference between the presence of facial and body hair in terms of safety in the pool, but comfort and individual care are important.
Egorova also stressed that the sanitary condition of the pool remains a key safety factor. If the water is poorly disinfected, it is possible to become infected with infections such as chlamydia, regardless of the presence or absence of hair in visitors.
Earlier, Elizaveta Shukhman, a dermatologist and cosmetologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), said that chlorine used to disinfect water in swimming pools is able to oxidize proteins, including collagen and elastin, which leads to loss of skin elasticity and the formation of wrinkles.
