On May 5, Pope Leo XIV responded to comments made by US President Donald Trump, recalling the main mission of the church.

Earlier, Trump attacked the head of the Vatican. The American leader said that he does not need a pontiff who opposes his political course. According to the president, Pope Leo XIV would not have been in the Vatican if Trump himself had not taken up a post in the White House.

"The mission of the church is to proclaim the gospel and to preach peace. If anyone wants to criticize me for proclaiming the gospel, let them do it truthfully," the Vatican News portal quotes him as saying.

In addition, the pontiff expressed hope for a "good dialogue" with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Their meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 7.

Leo XIV stated on April 7 that the threats of the US president against Iran and its people are completely unacceptable. At the same time, he appealed to representatives of the international community to think about the consequences of a possible military clash for civilians.
