The traumatologist spoke about the safety rules in the summer season
The summer season is traditionally accompanied by an increase in activity among children and adults, but at the same time, the number of injuries increases dramatically — from bruises and sprains to fractures, burns and water damage. Alexander Shelepov, a traumatologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about this on May 20.
According to the specialist, in case of serious injuries — suspected fracture or dislocation — it is unacceptable to try to "set" the limb on your own. The main signs of a dangerous condition are severe pain, inability to move, and deformity. In such cases, the victim must be immobilized, the limb fixed with improvised means and taken to the doctor as soon as possible.
"Less obvious, but no less common injuries are bruises and sprains. They are often underestimated, although they also require attention. Typical symptoms are swelling, hematoma, and pain when moving. It is recommended to provide rest in the first hours, apply cold and lift the limb. If pain persists or movement is limited, it is important to exclude more serious injuries," the expert said.
Wounds, burns, and insect and animal bites require special attention in summer. Any skin damage must be rinsed, treated with antiseptic and covered with a sterile bandage. In case of burns, cooling with water and avoiding the use of oils and "folk remedies" is important. In case of a snake bite, immediate medical attention is required, and in case of a tick bite, removal at a medical facility.
Among the seasonal risks, the doctor also identified heat stroke and injuries on the water. Overheating can be accompanied by weakness, dizziness and fever, and in severe cases, impaired consciousness. In such a situation, it is necessary to quickly cool down and call an ambulance. Jumping in unfamiliar places and swimming in a state of intoxication are particularly dangerous on the water.
Shelepov stressed that most summer injuries can be prevented by following basic safety rules, paying attention to the state of health and monitoring children during outdoor activities.
On May 4, Andrey Konovalov, an orthopedic traumatologist of the highest category, said that outdoor recreation - whether it's a cottage, picnic or active tourism — carries significant risks for the spine, especially after a long winter without physical exertion. Heavy lifting is the most dangerous, especially for the elderly. Improper lifting can lead to the formation of a herniated disc with characteristic symptoms — "lumbago" in the leg.
