Sweden has proposed the creation of a civilian foreign intelligence service
A new civilian foreign intelligence service will be created in Sweden, which is scheduled to start operating in January 2027. This was announced on May 5 by the country's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Steenergaard at a press conference.
"During the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it has become abundantly clear that information superiority and the ability to quickly and continuously adapt various technical systems are just as important as advanced weapons systems," Steenergaard said on the Swedish Foreign Ministry's website.
According to the minister, the new structure, the Swedish Foreign Intelligence Service (UND), will be comparable to the British MI6.
Currently, the country already has a military intelligence and security service, MUST, responsible for countering external threats, as well as SÄPO, engaged in counterintelligence and counterterrorism.
German political scientist and military analyst Carlo Masala said on May 3 that a potential conflict between Russia and NATO could allegedly begin before the onset of 2029. The expert pointed out that the German Armed Forces are not sufficiently prepared for a potential conflict.
