Blunt knives in the kitchen are more dangerous than sharp ones, and become one of the main causes of household injuries during cooking. Olga Pastushenko, the leading brand manager of the Röndell brand, and Elena Shidlovskaya, a psychologist at the Scandinavian Health Center, explained to Izvestia on May 8 why a non-sharp instrument leads to cuts more often and at what age a child can be introduced to piercing and cutting objects.

According to experts, the key difference between a sharp and a blunt knife is the level of control. A well-sharpened object penetrates the product easily, allowing precise movement control. While blunt requires more effort, which increases the risk of slipping and loss of control over the blade.

Experts recommend paying special attention to the condition of kitchen tools. Knives must be regularly sharpened using safety devices. Proper storage is equally important: products should not be mixed up in a drawer to avoid accidental cuts.

Before starting cooking, it is important to choose the right knife: it is better to use a product with a short blade for slicing vegetables, and a longer and heavier one for meat. You should also pay attention to the handle: it should fit comfortably in your hand, provide a secure grip and not slip.

"The technique of work is of particular importance. When slicing vegetables, it is important to place the product stably on the board in advance and keep your fingers so that they do not fall under the blade — then the knife moves smoothly and without disruption. When working with meat, it is better to choose a product according to size and not press too hard — then it will not go to the side and cutting will become easier. It is important to avoid sudden and uncertain movements, because they are the ones that most often lead to injuries," said Pastushenko.

Special attention in this topic is paid to the safety of children — they are most often the most vulnerable in the kitchen. Psychologist Shidlovskaya emphasized that the skills of safe behavior are not formed immediately, but gradually and directly depend on what kind of experience a child gets in the process of interacting with everyday objects.

"When parents are wondering at what age children can be allowed to use stabbing and cutting objects in the kitchen, in fact, it is worth focusing not on age, but on the level of its readiness. It is important to assess whether the child understands the rules, whether he is able to stop at the request of an adult and perform actions calmly — without haste and without playing with objects," the specialist explained.

The psychologist added that getting to know the kitchen should happen gradually: from simple tasks like washing vegetables and stirring to more complex actions. Using a knife is possible only when the child is able to follow the instructions and understand the purpose of the tool.

Shidlovskaya also stressed that not only the general readiness is important, but also the current condition of the baby. Fatigue, haste, or emotional excitement are reasons to postpone working with sharp objects.

Experts summarized that safety in the kitchen depends on a combination of factors: the condition of the tools, proper technique and careful attention to the process.

On April 29, Dr. Corey Maas, an associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, told Popular Science that scars remain on the body throughout life, because scar tissue performs a protective function, not an aesthetic one. According to him, the skin consists of three layers — the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. If the injury affects only the epidermis, the scar usually does not form. With deeper damage, the recovery process may take several months or years.
