The withdrawal of US troops from Germany is perceived by many Germans very positively, but Washington's decision may be a signal to the European Union (EU). Austrian geopolitical analyst Patrick Poppel told Izvestia about this on May 2.

"The reduction in the number of American troops on German territory, which is due to take place in the coming months, is perceived very positively by many people in Germany. The Soviet troops left, but the Americans somehow delayed it, and now they are also starting to leave, at least partially," the analyst said.

At the same time, Poppel noted that the withdrawal of American troops from the EU territory may be related to Washington's fears that an armed conflict could soon begin in Europe, in which the United States does not want to participate. He also pointed to attempts by European states to act independently in the field of armaments, which, according to him, could lead to an escalation in relations with Russia.

On May 1, the Reuters news agency, citing the Pentagon, reported that the United States would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany within 6-12 months. It is noted that the reduction in the number of troops will allow the number of American troops in Europe to return approximately to the level that existed before 2022.

Gunnar Lindemann, a member of the Berlin deputies from Alternative for Germany, told Izvestia on May 2 that his party demands the withdrawal of the entire American contingent and American weapons from the territory of Germany and considers the withdrawal of the first 5,000 soldiers to be a good step towards this. Lindemann added that Germany does not need American "occupation forces" and is very grateful to the USSR for withdrawing its army from the country in the early 1990s.
