The head of the German Defense Ministry called the withdrawal of US troops from Germany predictable.

The decision to withdraw 5,000 American troops from Germany was predictable. This was reported on April 2 by the Reuters news agency, citing the words of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

"The presence of American soldiers in Europe and especially in Germany is in the interests of both Germany and the United States <...> But we, the Europeans, must take more responsibility for our own security," he said.

At the same time, the head of the military department "made it clear" that the decision to withdraw the US contingent was not unexpected for him. Pistorius said that Europe, and Germany in particular, should start building up its own defense capabilities.

Earlier in the day, Gunnar Lindemann, a member of the German Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said that his political bloc welcomes the withdrawal of American soldiers. He added that the AFD expects a complete withdrawal of the US contingent from the country, calling these forces "occupation forces."

On May 1, the Reuters news agency, citing the Pentagon, reported that the United States would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany within 6-12 months. According to the agency, the withdrawal of troops is expected within the next 6-12 months. It is noted that the reduction in the number of troops will allow the number of American troops in Europe to return approximately to the level that existed before 2022.
