Strict compliance with traffic regulations is the key to safety when traveling by car. This was recalled on May 1 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

A long-term analysis shows that in early May, the number of trips by private transport increases sharply, the traffic police noted. In addition to traditional trips to the countryside and picnics in nature, many people take vacations between holidays and go on long road trips.

During such trips, motorists should make regular stops at gas stations or service areas, and the route should be set in such a way that the driver has the opportunity to have a full-fledged daily rest, the Main Directorate for Road Safety emphasized The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. Before traveling, you should make sure that the transport is technically sound, the department emphasizes.

"The total travel time during the day should not exceed eight to nine hours. At the same time, at the slightest signs of fatigue or drowsiness, it is necessary to take a break by going to a cafe, a recreation area or staying overnight," the Traffic police said.

When choosing the speed of movement, the driver should be guided primarily by road and weather conditions, and not only by the established restrictions on a particular section of the highway, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia emphasized.

Also, motorists are strictly forbidden to be distracted from driving the car and use the phone while driving. Special care should be taken when overtaking — this maneuver is allowed only in authorized places and only after making sure it is safe, the traffic police noted.

If children are driving in the car, then the rhythm of movement should be chosen in such a way as to completely eliminate the need for overtaking, the Traffic police said. Of course, it is necessary to transport the child by car in compliance with all safety requirements — in a child restraint device corresponding to the height and weight of the child. At the same time, various straps, adapters, clamps, pads and other similar items are not child restraints.

"Both the driver and all passengers, including those in the back seats, must wear seat belts," the Traffic Police said.

In early May, the weather in most regions of the country is quite unstable and its nature can change quickly. This should be taken into account when planning trips, monitor weather forecasts in advance, and also take into account information about possible road closures due to flooding or bad weather conditions, the State Traffic Inspectorate advised.

"If you are caught in bad weather on the way, it is better to wait out the adverse weather conditions in a safe place. If this is not possible, you should continue driving with maximum caution: in conditions of precipitation, it is necessary to reduce speed, and if the weather conditions worsen, turn on fog lights or an alarm system," the department recommended.

The day before, it was reported that by the end of the first quarter of 2026, the number of road accidents in Moscow decreased by 16% compared to last year, and the death toll by 40%.
