Belgium announced that it intends to buy a controlling stake in its nuclear reactors from the French company Engie, and therefore suspends all dismantling work. This was announced on April 30 by the Euractiv portal.

"An agreement has been reached with Engie to determine the conditions and launch the necessary research for the complete takeover of the Belgian nuclear fleet. <...> Until then, all dismantling work is suspended with immediate effect," the newspaper quoted Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever as saying.

The country's authorities expect to strengthen the role of nuclear energy by abandoning previous plans to curtail it, the article clarifies. De Wever stressed that the government is betting on "safe, affordable and sustainable energy" in an effort to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper reported on April 18 that European officials prefer not to advertise their dependence on Russian nuclear fuel supplies. The article quotes the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, who called for lessons to be learned from the new energy crisis provoked by the conflict over Iran.
