- The Polish Ministry of Defense announced the purchase of anti-personnel mines after leaving the KZPM
Poland will begin purchasing anti-personnel mines for its army after withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention prohibiting the Use, storage and production of such munitions. This was announced on April 29 by the Minister of Defense of the Republic Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh.
"After Poland withdrew from the Ottawa Convention, we will soon start purchasing anti—personnel mines," he said at a press conference broadcast on TVP Info.
According to the head of the department, Warsaw will purchase half of the mines abroad, and the rest from Polish manufacturers.
On June 25 last year, the Polish Sejm voted to denounce the Ottawa Convention prohibiting the use, storage and production of anti-personnel mines. The bill was supported by 413 deputies. Only 15 opposed it.
On January 16, Deputy Minister of National Defense of Poland Cesari Tomczyk said that the republic intends to prepare for mining its eastern border as part of the Eastern Shield program. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova added on February 20 that Poland's decision could lead to a domino effect and further escalation of tensions in Europe.
