Cardiologist warned about the risk of stroke when working outdoors
Working outdoors in adverse weather conditions and high physical activity can increase the risk of stroke, especially in people with chronic diseases. This was announced by cardiologist Branislav Bogunovich in an interview with Izvestia.
"Prolonged exposure to the heat outside leads to dehydration, the body narrows blood vessels to ensure blood supply to the brain," he explained.
In such conditions, the doctor noted, people with hypertension may develop a hypertensive crisis. The opposite effect is also possible. Some people, especially the elderly, may have lower blood pressure.
"Heavy physical labor, as a rule, leads to increased pressure: during exertion, blood vessels constrict with muscle tension, and pressure increases," Bogunovich emphasized.
He added that such changes may be temporary, but over time they can lead to the development of chronic diseases. At the same time, the cold factor is also not excluded: frosty weather, like heat, can contribute to an increase in blood pressure, which is one of the main risk factors for stroke.
"The first sign of a stroke may be loss of consciousness. It is also worth paying attention if a person has become inadequate: he does not understand when he is addressed, does not answer questions clearly, behaves inappropriately," he said.
Other characteristic signs include sudden weakness in an arm or leg, inability to stand or walk, and a distorted face. According to the specialist, such symptoms can occur in any situation and require urgent medical attention.
Oksana Drapkina, the chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Health for Therapy and general medical practice, reported on April 25 that hypertension is widespread in Russia, and patients with such a diagnosis are subject to mandatory follow-up.
