Adults with severe atopic dermatitis are susceptible to significant sleep and memory disorders, according to researchers from the University of Sainz Malaysia. This was reported on April 27 in the journal Medical Xpress.

What is atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is accompanied by severe itching and often disrupts nighttime sleep. Previously, scientists have already pointed out the connection of itchy dermatoses with a deterioration in the quality of life, but the relationship with cognitive functions, in particular with memory— has so far remained poorly understood.

"Assessment of memory impairments should be included in the examination of adult patients with atopic dermatitis who report sleep problems, along with optimizing disease control and correcting sleep disorders," the study authors write.

The study involved 78 adults with atopic dermatitis. Among them, 77% reported poor sleep quality, and 64% had memory impairments. Scientists have recorded a direct relationship between the severity of the disease and the time to fall asleep: in mild cases, it averaged 32 minutes, in moderate cases — 49 minutes, in severe cases — 63 minutes.

At the same time, the total sleep duration decreased from 6.7 hours in patients with mild form to 4.5 hours in patients with severe form. Poor sleep quality (adjusted odds ratio — 4.4) and daytime dysfunction (3.1) became independent predictors of cognitive decline.

Scientific American magazine reported on March 22 that researchers from Fudan University in China have identified a network of neurons that responds to stress by activating immune cells in the skin, which leads to an exacerbation of eczema symptoms.
