- In Italy, a woman had her breasts removed and was treated for cancer for seven years due to a mistake by doctors.
In Italy, a 51-year-old woman was mistakenly diagnosed with breast cancer and treated for seven years for a disease she did not have. This was reported by the Repubblica edition on April 28.
"After seven years of testing between suffering and surgery, a DNA test revealed an error, and now the patient is demanding compensation," the publication says.
In 2018, after a biopsy, the woman was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the third degree. Later, she underwent a full mastectomy of her left breast.
Three days later, a histological examination of the removed tissue revealed no cancer cells, but the woman was told that this confirmed the success of the operation. Between 2021 and 2024, she underwent six more reconstructive surgeries.
Doubts arose during the reconstructive path: of the 14 tissue fragments taken during the biopsy, only five were analyzed. The final proof was provided by a genetic study — DNA comparison showed that the cancer tissue belongs to another patient. The case has been referred to the court to establish liability and assess the damage.
The New York Times reported on April 27 that a homeless man in Honolulu, USA, will receive compensation in the amount of $975,000 after he spent more than two years in custody and a psychiatric hospital due to a police error. Doctors considered the allegations of a mistaken arrest to be "nonsense" and forced the patient to take sedatives.
