Bad breath in pets can be associated with both oral problems and diseases of internal organs. This was reported to Izvestia on May 2 by veterinarians, experts from SUPERPET natural food manufacturer Olga Tereshko and Elena Frolenko.

According to experts, the most common cause is plaque and tartar, which, in the absence of care, can lead to inflammatory diseases of the gums and oral cavity.

"If you do nothing about it, gum and oral diseases can develop: gingivitis, periodontitis, stomatitis. The smell can also be caused by sore teeth, which are most often to be removed," said Olga Tereshko, a veterinarian and dentist.

She clarified that an unpleasant odor can also be caused by bad teeth, which in some cases require removal. Among the signs are refusal of dry food, painful sensations when chewing, yellow plaque and gum inflammation. At the same time, cats often hide their discomfort by changing their behavior. The expert added that the cause of the smell may be stuck food remains or foreign objects. In more rare cases, an unpleasant odor is associated with growths in the oral cavity.

Tereshko stressed that for prevention, it is necessary to regularly brush the teeth of a pet and teach it to this procedure from an early age. Alternatively, you can use special care products or natural treats that promote mechanical cleaning of teeth. According to experts, proper nutrition also plays an important role in preventing plaque formation. The diet should be balanced and contain a sufficient amount of protein.

However, as noted by veterinarian Elena Frolenko, bad breath may indicate diseases of the internal organs.

"If the veterinarian has ruled out dental diseases, but the smell persists, it is important to pay attention to its nature. Do not ignore the problem, it may indicate serious systemic disorders in the pet's body," she stressed.

According to her, an ammonia smell can indicate kidney problems, a sweet smell can indicate diabetes, a fishy smell can indicate liver disease, and an acidic smell can indicate disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Frolenko added that such conditions are often accompanied by additional symptoms, including vomiting, decreased appetite and weight loss.

Experts stressed that when a pet has bad breath, it is important not to ignore the problem and contact a veterinarian in a timely manner, as it may indicate serious disorders in the body.

On April 15, veterinarians of the State Veterinary Service compiled a guide on how to arrange a happy life for a pet. Experts recommended keeping scales in the kitchen for precise control of food portions, as well as two bowls for water and food. Special brushes should be provided for hair care. If a cat lives at home, then you should take care of the scratching post. Automatic feeders help to observe the diet, and a video surveillance system helps to monitor the pet during the absence of the owners.
