- The media reported on the desire of the Greek authorities to ban anonymity on the Web.
The Greek authorities intend to move towards reducing toxicity in the online space by introducing a ban on anonymity in social networks. This was announced on April 28 by the Euractiv portal.
"The main problem of anonymity is toxicity: anyone, especially on social media, can blacken a person and blacken a reputation without any consequences. <...> We need to find a way to require platforms to verify the identity of accounts. There are many technical ways to achieve this," said Dimitris Papastergiou, Greece's Minister of Digital Governance.
At the same time, Papastergiou noted that in order to implement these plans, Athens will have to introduce a mechanism for authenticating users on the Internet, "even if they act under pseudonyms."
On April 8, Reuters reported that Greece is planning to announce a new bill that would ban the use of social media by children under the age of 15. It was emphasized that if Athens announces new restrictive measures in the online space, the country will join the list of other states in which similar bills have either already been adopted or are actively being developed.
