Folk signs for April 30: what can and cannot be done
In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of April 30 and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.
Folk signs for April 30th
In Russia, April 30 was the day of Zosima the Bee-hunter. It was one of the important spring holidays associated with the start of the beekeeping season. It was believed that it was by this time that bees finally wake up after winter and begin to collect the first nectar.
The main tradition of the day was to put the beehives in the apiary — they were carefully taken out of the birdhouses, where they stood all winter, and placed under the rays of the spring sun. The owner walked around each hive with a lighted candle, sprinkled them with holy water and said: "The swarm is swarming — Zosima is having fun."
The hives were carefully cleaned and the first flight of insects was monitored. It was believed that if bees were actively circling nearby, the year would turn out well. We tried to work calmly, without noise and sudden movements, so as not to "anger the bee." Also on this day, the housewives baked special gingerbread cookies — "bees" or "centurions". They were served to children and neighbors to attract prosperity to the house.
The behavior of bees was also used to judge the weather in the current season. If the bees did not want to fly out or returned to the hives early, this foreshadowed a prolonged bad weather and a cold May. If they were flying low above the ground, they were preparing for rainy weather. If they circled the hive in a noisy swarm, they expected warmth and abundant honey harvest in summer.
Other signs of the day:
- lots of dew on the grass — for a sunny day;
- The wind from the east leads to a cold snap;
- Flickering sunlight on the water leads to frequent thunderstorms;
- in the morning, the fog spreads over the lowlands — for the harvest summer.
What not to do on April 30th
There were a number of strict prohibitions on the day of Zosima Bee. For example, it was strictly forbidden to eat honey before the hives were placed in the apiary and consecrated with prayer. Also, any swearing and profanity near the hives was strictly prohibited: our ancestors believed that bees, upon hearing swearing, would leave the yard forever.
What else can't be done on April 30th:
- ruining bee hives unnecessarily leads to a poor honey harvest;
- • refusing honey treats leads to loss of income;
- • starting new businesses may not bring results.;
- • working in a bad mood leads to failures in the household.
What is the church holiday on April 30th?
On April 30 (April 17, Old Style), the Orthodox Church commemorates St. Zosima of Solovetsky, the wonderworker and founder of the famous Solovetsky Monastery. He was born in the Novgorod land, lost his parents early and, having distributed his inheritance to the poor, went to seek solitude on the harsh shore of the White Sea.
Around 1436, together with the Monk Herman, he sailed to the deserted Solovetsky Island, where he had a vision: a beautiful church floating in the air in the place where the famous monastery would soon appear. Over time, the monastery became one of the largest spiritual centers of Russia.
During Zosima's lifetime, the monastery strengthened and gained fame due to its strict rules and high discipline. The saint himself was revered as a spiritual ascetic who devoted his life to prayer, work and strengthening the monastic community in the North of Russia. The Monk Zosima died in April 1478, having prepared his coffin ahead of time and having given instructions to the brethren.
On the same date, St. Acacius, Bishop of Melitene, is commemorated. He was born in the IV century in the Armenian city of Melitina in a family that had not had children for a long time, and was promised to God from infancy. Raised by St. Otry, a renowned defender of Orthodoxy, Akaky passed through all the stages of church service: he was a reader, deacon, and priest. And after the death of his teacher, he was elected bishop.
Akaky also became famous for the gift of miracle-working. According to church tradition, one day during a drought he served liturgy in the field, and the wine in the bowl suddenly dissolved in the pouring rain, which watered the parched earth. In addition, cases of miraculous healings of physical and mental ailments are associated with his name.
Prayers on April 30th
Believers make various requests to these saints. Saint Zosima, who is revered in Russia as the patron saint of beekeepers, prays for protection from harm, a good harvest and well-being in the household, especially in beekeeping. Acacius of Melitene is traditionally asked to strengthen faith, spiritual fortitude, and protection from temptation.
Prayer to Zosima Solovetsky
"O Venerable Father, great intercessor in sorrow and hearer of our prayers, saint of God and wonderworker Zosimo! Do not forget, as you promised, to visit your children. If you are not with us in body, but in spirit, you are always with us. We beseech you, O Venerable Father, to deliver us from fire and sword, from the invasion of foreigners and internecine warfare, from the corrupting winds and from sudden death, and from all the demonic devices that come upon us. Hear us sinners, and accept this prayer and our supplication, as an incense burner, as a pleasing sacrifice, and quicken our souls, through evil deeds and counsels and thoughts of those who have been slain. Just as you healed the incurable wounds of many, and delivered us from unclean spirits tormented by evil; so deliver us from the bonds of the enemy, and from the snares of the devil, and lead us out of the depths of our sins, and by your merciful visitation and intercession protect us from enemies visible and invisible, by the grace and power of the Most Holy Trinity, always Now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
Prayer to Acacius of Melitene
"O holy head, Venerable Father, most blessed Abba Akaki, do not forget your poor to the end, but always remember us in holy and auspicious prayers to God: remember your flock, which you have saved yourself, and do not forget to visit your children. Pray for us, holy Father, for your spiritual children, for you have Boldness to the Heavenly King: do not be silent for us to the Lord, and do not despise us, who honor you with faith and love. <...> Do not depart from us in spirit, keeping us from the arrows of the enemy and all the charms of demons and the machinations of the devil, our good shepherd. <...> We bow down to you and pray to you: pray for To the Almighty God, for the benefit of our souls, and grant us time for repentance, so that we may pass from earth to heaven unhindered, and may we be delivered from bitter ordeals, demons of the air, and eternal torment, and may we be heirs of the heavenly Kingdom with all the righteous who have pleased our Lord Jesus Christ from the beginning.: To Him belongs all glory, honor, and worship, together with His Beginningless Father, and with His All-holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
Earlier, Izvestia told what they pray for on the feast of the Ilyinsky (Chernigov) Icon of the Mother of God.
