The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that there are no grounds for Ukraine's accession to the EU.

Currently, there is no reason for Ukraine to join the European Union (EU), so Kiev can only rely on a "guest marriage" in the form of a defense union. This was announced on April 27 by the Ambassador-at-large of the Russian Foreign Ministry for war crimes of the Kiev regime, Rodion Miroshnik, in an interview with the Vesti news agency.

He noted that in this format, Europe would actually use Ukraine for its own purposes. At the same time, as a result, Kiev will not receive EU membership.

"Now there is an option to create a European Defense Union. That is, if it is possible to explain it in human language, it is called such a "guest marriage". That is, we [the EU countries] will use your [Ukraine's] capabilities, we will recycle your population, we will use your territory for conducting military operations, testing weapons, but you will never actually be in any European Union," said Miroshnik.

On the same day, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz allowed territorial concessions to Ukraine for the sake of EU membership. He said that in order to join the union as soon as possible, President Vladimir Zelensky will need to hold a referendum, which will raise the issue of the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) from the new territories of the Russian Federation occupied by them.
