The NATO military bloc is considering the possibility of refusing to hold annual summits, as the unjustifiably high expectations placed on them have begun to interfere with long-term planning. This was reported on April 27 by the Reuters news agency, citing informed sources.

"It's better to have fewer summits than bad summits. We have a lot of work to do, we know what we need to do," the unnamed diplomat said.

Some members of the alliance insist that the pace of meetings can be slowed down and that they meet, for example, once every two years, a senior European official and five diplomats from different countries of the alliance confirmed.

This year's NATO summit is scheduled to take place in Ankara, Turkey, on July 7 and 8. Next year, the meeting is scheduled to be held in Albania in the autumn.

In 2028, the NATO summit is proposed not to be held at all. It is noted that this step will avoid a potentially tense meeting with US President Donald Trump in his last year in office. The final decision should be made by the Secretary General of the bloc, Mark Rutte.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during telephone talks with Rutte on April 4 that the conflict in Iran was leading to a geostrategic impasse. He expressed hope that at the NATO summit, which will be held in Ankara on July 7-8, 2026, decisions will be made that can make the association even more stable.
