Umbrella of help: when will the abnormal snowfall end in Moscow
Heavy snow and rain will continue to fall in Central Russia at least until Wednesday, meteorologists warned. Next, the cyclone will shift to the Volga region and the Urals. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, more than 30 people across the country were injured due to bad weather. Hundreds of trees fell, dozens of cars were damaged, and more than 76,000 citizens were left without power. What damage was caused by the elements and how the cyclone will continue to behave — in the Izvestia material.
How Moscow is experiencing record snow and rain
Since the morning of April 27, the Moscow authorities have been warning citizens about the rapid deterioration of the weather: on Monday night, the capital was covered with snow and rain, it continued to fall throughout the day and did not end in the evening. It was accompanied by strong winds with gusts up to 23 m/s.
"The capital's services are working on the streets of the city in an enhanced mode,— said Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. — Please be careful, take care of yourself. The bad weather will last for the next couple of days."
The wind knocked down trees, and in house chats, residents warned each other about possible dangers. "Not a good morning. Neighbors, be careful. And Mercedes should probably be removed," they wrote in one of the chats at home in the north of Moscow, accompanying the message with a photo of a broken tree.
Dozens of cars were damaged due to bad weather, and fallen trunks blocked roadways and tram tracks in places. An orange weather hazard level has been introduced in the capital. Residents also received messages from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations with a warning: "Be careful and careful!"
"Trees felled by a strong wind are promptly sawn and removed," the capital's municipal management complex assured. — The condition of the road network is continuously monitored and the necessary routine operations are performed. The required number of pieces of equipment is involved."
They also noted that crews and special equipment of the State Unitary Enterprise Mosvodostok are on duty around the clock, pumping equipment is on duty in places of possible temporary accumulations of water.
The reason for the snowfall in the capital was a cold cyclone that formed over the Leningrad region, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonovosti news agency, told Izvestia.
— Light precipitation is still possible on Wednesday night. Then the cyclone will gradually shift to the Volga region, and then it will move to the north of the Urals," she said.
The snowfall broke the record of almost 150 years ago.
— It has been a long time since there has been such heavy precipitation in April. The last record, 14 mm, was recorded in Moscow in 1880," emphasized Tatiana Pozdnyakova.
By morning, a 12 cm high snow cover had formed in the capital.
"There has never been so much snow in Moscow on April 27, and the previous record for this day was 10 cm and lasted 55 years," the Phobos center said.
The cyclone that covered the central part of Russia will affect the weather until the end of April, Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, told Izvestia.
— However, the degree of bad weather is gradually decreasing. And on Thursday, precipitation will become local, short—term, and the temperature these days will be quite low - in the range of +2...+4 degrees. It could be +6...+8 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday," the expert explained.
By May 1, the thermometer may rise to 10 degrees Celsius. Closer to May 9, we should expect the temperature to rise to the norm, familiar to local residents, that is, +15 ...+18 degrees.
During the day, delays of flights to and from Moscow were recorded — 10 flights were postponed for more than two hours. Trains were also delayed on Paveletsky, Rizhsky, Savelovsky, Ryazan and Yaroslavsky routes.
And Muscovites complained about the rise in taxi prices.
"Heavy snowfall has shown the vulnerability of the transport system of megacities during peak periods," said Ivan Litvinov, head of the Association of the Self—Employed in Russia. — At such moments, the cost of taxi rides increases up to six times, the waiting time increases three to five times.
What is the rest of Russia going through
Precipitation is expected throughout Central Russia in the next two days, but its amount will gradually decrease along with the precipitation zone, said Alexander Shuvalov. Soon, the cyclone will leave Smolensk, Bryansk, Moscow, Vladimir, Yaroslavl and Kostroma and head northeast.
Nevertheless, heavy snowfalls will continue in the Leningrad, Moscow and Tver regions in the near future, Tatiana Pozdnyakova noted.
"Moreover, the air temperature in Central Russia will be eight degrees below the climatic norm by the end of the month," she said.
So, in the coming days in Moscow it will be no higher than +5 degrees, and at night — from -1 to +2 degrees.
Yuri Varakin, adviser to the director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, confirmed that the bad weather will persist for the next three to four days. He noted that on the night of April 28, heavy snow will come to the Vologda region. At the same time, a red weather danger level will be declared in the region. But in the Krasnodar Territory, Crimea, Sochi and Stavropol, the weather will be cloudless until April 30, Alexander Shuvalov said. However, heavy rains will arrive there by the end of April, and the air temperature will drop from plus 15-17 to plus 10-12 degrees. According to him, precipitation will be brought by a cyclone that is moving from Turkey.
It will be too cold for the south at the beginning of May, which is uncharacteristic for this part of the country, Alexander Shuvalov said.
"At the same time, it will be almost summer in the south of Siberia in early May," he added. — Residents of Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk and Tomsk will celebrate May 1 practically in summer clothes.
— An increase in temperature to +20 degrees and cloudy weather in the first days of May will be established in the Kaliningrad region. From May 3 to May 5-6, there will already be a minimum of precipitation, and there will be practically no precipitation in the Leningrad, Pskov, and Novgorod regions," Yuri Varakin added.
But a series of cyclones will hit the Far East this week. Precipitation in the form of snow and rain will fall in the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Territory and Chukotka, he said.
"In early May, we are waiting for another cyclone to leave the Japanese archipelago for the south of Primorsky Krai, Sakhalin, also with heavy precipitation and stormy weather in the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk," the expert said.
What consequences did the snowfall have?
As a result of bad weather in the Siberian, Volga, Central and Northwestern Federal Districts, 32 people were injured, including five children, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.
"More than 740 trees have fallen, 80 cars have been damaged, and more than 76,000 people remain without power," the ministry said.
According to Izvestia, a tree fell on two teenage girls in Samara. One of them died, and the other is in the hospital. In addition, a man was killed by a fallen tree on another street in the city.
As a result of the bad weather, 75 trees were felled in the Moscow Region and 65 in the Tula region, the regional authorities said. Andrey Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, also announced local power outages in the region.
"Special attention is being paid to the most difficult districts: additional brigades have been sent to Ramenskiy, Domodedovo, Dmitrovsky and Chekhov," he said.
Alexander Starostin, a safety expert and executive director of the Fire Center Group of companies, recommended that drivers minimize the use of personal transport, especially for those who have already changed winter tires to summer tires. Drivers who cannot refrain from driving should avoid sudden maneuvers, do not exceed the speed limit and keep their distance from other road users.
