A group of 22 monks was detained at the Sri Lanka airport on suspicion of transporting more than 110 kg of drugs. This was reported on April 26 by the Daily Mirror newspaper.

"Employees of the airport and the Bureau of Counter-Narcotics identified the suspects upon arrival from Bangkok on April 25 at about 22:10 (19:40 Moscow time) on Thai AirAsia flight FD—140," the material says.

During the search, police officers found that the monks had hidden more than 110 kg of cannabis-based drugs in their luggage. The drugs were hidden in bags with educational supplies and various food items, according to the authors of the material.

According to local law enforcement officials, each of the 22 detainees had more than five kilograms of narcotic substances in their personal luggage.

The Sri Lanka Narcotics Bureau is currently conducting further investigations to establish the origin of the drugs and possible links to an international drug trafficking network.

On April 7, it was reported that at least nine well-known representatives of show business and the film industry in Turkey were detained in Istanbul during a new anti-drug operation. Actor Ibrahim Celikkol was among the detainees. Popular pop singers Bengyu, Simge Sagyn, Melek Mosso and Mustafa Dzhezhdeli were also taken into custody.
