The doctor talked about safe weight loss
Olesya Gurova, PhD, Chief Physician of the Professorial Clinic of Endocrinology and Diabetes, spoke about safe weight loss.
In conversation with aif.ru On Monday, April 27, the specialist noted that many people begin to lose weight after experiencing health problems such as pressure, shortness of breath, and joint pain. At the same time, according to surveys, less than 20% of people turn to a doctor for a recommendation.
According to the expert, it is worth focusing not on sensations, but on the body mass index (BMI): it helps to objectively assess risks. Excess weight may not be felt for a long time, but it gradually increases the likelihood of hypertension, diabetes and other diseases. With a decrease in body weight, these risks decrease, therefore, if the BMI deviates from the norm, it is important to consult a specialist. Experts also recommend taking into account the waist circumference: its increase indicates a high risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.
Most people believe that exercise and diet are enough to lose weight, but the doctor notes that it is difficult to change the lifestyle, and after restrictions there is often a "rollback". This is due to physiological changes — the regulation of appetite is disrupted, and it becomes more difficult to control nutrition.
According to Gurova, in such cases, modern drugs can be used that help reduce appetite, change eating behavior and maintain results. At the same time, it is recommended to reduce weight gradually — by about 0.5–1 kg per week. Already reducing body weight by 5-10% significantly reduces health risks.
Doctors emphasize that obesity is a chronic disease, and it should be treated together with specialists, and not with the help of independent diets.
Endocrinologist Irina Troitskaya dispelled the popular myth on April 23 that it is more difficult to lose weight after 35 years due to a slowing metabolism. Troitskaya noted that hormonal changes and insulin resistance contribute to fat accumulation. kp.ru .
Prior to that, on April 15, a survey showed that only 12% of Russians were completely satisfied with their physical fitness, while 63% believed that they had something to improve, and another 25% were dissatisfied. 360.ru .
On April 13, nutritionist and nutritionist Anastasia Samoilova explained why not everyone can lose weight. According to her, the reason often lies not in willpower, but in hormonal disorders, primarily insulin resistance, in which the body reacts worse to insulin and begins to accumulate fat.
In March, pediatrician-immunologist Andrey Prodeus said that to lose weight, you need to eat five times a day, but in small portions. The serving volume should be 250-300 ml, that is, one glass, according to NSN.
Also in March, endocrinologist Natalia Tananakina, in an interview with RIAMO, said that cardio is not enough for effective weight loss. According to her, excessive cardio without recovery increases cortisol levels, which can cause the accumulation of abdominal fat, while muscle mass does not increase, writes RT.
Earlier, doctor Maria Matveeva, in an interview with the Moscow city news agency, said that a severe decrease in body weight in a short time can lead to baldness or the development of gastritis. Adequate weight loss is 5-10% of body weight in three to six months.
Before that Pravda.Ru She wrote that for effective weight loss, it is important to take into account not only the number of calories, but also their quality: foods with fiber, protein and healthy fats saturate better and help reduce weight.
