On April 26, US President Donald Trump condemned a journalist who asked him to evaluate a letter from a shooting suspect at a White House Correspondents' Association reception with the American leader.

"I've been waiting for you to read it out. You (Journalists. — Ed.) terrible people. <...> You know, he's a sick man. But you should be ashamed of yourself for reading this," he said in an interview with CBS.

Trump confirmed that the shooter had indeed written the message, but called its contents "nonsense" from a "sick person." The US president also said that he was being associated with things that had nothing to do with him, and stressed that he was fully justified.

In his message, the attacker accused the head of the White House of child molestation, among other things.

"He wrote it, yes. I'm not a rapist, I'm not a pedophile," Trump said.

Trump and his wife Melania were evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25 after the sounds of gunfire. Later, the American leader announced that the shooter had been detained. The federal prosecutor in Washington, Jeanine Pirro, said that the detainee after the shooting will appear in court on Monday, April 27.
