- The media reported on the beginning of the crucial phase of the rescue of a stranded whale in Germany
German specialists have begun the crucial phase of the operation to rescue Timmy the humpback whale, stuck in shallow waters in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on April 25.
"The actual transportation by barge is scheduled for Tuesday. The barge is expected to arrive on Monday evening," the publication says.
According to the new plan, the whale is going to be towed towards the Atlantic in an improvised "underwater aquarium" on a special barge.
Veterinarians assess the animal's condition as stable and severe, but note local improvements. Thanks to the regular application of zinc ointment to the skin of the whale, the specialists managed to almost completely stop the infections that arose due to the low salinity of the water in the Baltic Sea.
According to Bild, in the coming hours, experts will try to take blood from the whale, as well as inject it with a complex of vitamins and a nutrient solution through an endoscope.
The German online publication RND reported on April 20 that Timmy got off the shoal and swam. It is noted that volunteers have prepared boats to accompany and guide the whale if it goes out into open waters.
A new whale rescue operation was launched in Germany on April 16. It is noted that environmentalists, veterinarians and employees of the coastal services are involved in the rescue operation. The next day, the whale moved for the first time in three weeks.
Holger Kraus, Senior Commissioner of the Wismar Water Police, said on March 29 that the whale was likely to die. He said that he had already dealt with several whales of similar size and none of them managed to survive.
The humpback whale, which was rescued by the German services for about four days in the Baltic Sea, got stuck in shallow water again on March 28. As Bild pointed out, the police and the animal welfare service moved to the scene. The Coast Guard patrols the waters of the bay in search of other individuals.
