The US authorities have allowed the Venezuelan government to pay for the services of lawyers for the President of the republic, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Celia Flores. This was reported on April 25 by TASS with reference to a document from the database of the Federal Court of the Southern District of New York.

"The parties jointly notify the court that the Office of Foreign Assets Control has issued adjusted licenses related to legal services for Nicolas Maduro and Celia Flores. The adjusted licenses allow defense lawyers to receive payment from the Venezuelan government under certain conditions," states the letter addressed to Judge Alvin Hellerstein.

It is clarified that after receiving permission, the defense withdrew the previously submitted petitions. In them, the lawyers demanded that the criminal case against the Venezuelan leader be dropped, citing the inability to pay for legal services due to the current sanctions.

On April 19, The New York Times reported that purges against his supporters allegedly began in the Venezuelan elites after the abduction of the country's president. It was clarified that the Venezuelan authorities are pursuing such a policy in the face of threats from the United States.
