The expert reported on the EU's search for ways to confiscate Russian assets
The European Union (EU) is trying to find new mechanisms for the confiscation of Russia's frozen assets, but such actions can undermine confidence in the financial system of the association. This was announced on April 25 by Alexander Guerreiro, Doctor of Law and expert of the Global Fact Checking Network (GFCN) from Portugal.
"The EU is currently trying to work out some kind of compromise mechanism that would allow a limited group of member states to adopt and implement such a decision. This is due to the fact that there is no necessary majority or unanimity at the level of the entire association for its approval. This is what creates disagreements and friction within the European Union. Most countries are well aware of the risks that such a step entails," he explained in an interview with TASS.
In his opinion, this is not only a violation of international law, but also about possible financial consequences for EU countries. The expert noted that states will seriously reconsider the expediency of placing their assets in European financial institutions if the risk of their loss persists due to such an interpretation of legal norms.
Guerreiro added that the withdrawal of Russian assets could seriously affect financial stability, as well as the dynamics of the euro. He admitted that such decisions could lead to significant consequences, including undermining the financial systems of EU member states.
The expert also called the possible confiscation another violation of international law. He explained that Russia's assets are the property of a sovereign state, so any attempts to seize them would actually mean an attempt to take funds from a country that has the right to dispose of them independently.
According to Guerreiro, that is why Belgium, where a significant part of Russian assets are concentrated, opposes such initiatives and takes into account the possible consequences.
The head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, announced on April 23 that the EU had approved the 20th package of sanctions against Russia. According to him, by increasing aid to Kiev and increasing pressure on Moscow, the EU has moved forward in two directions of its strategy allegedly to achieve peace in Ukraine.
