- The Russian Foreign Ministry announced plans to hold a meeting of experts of the "nuclear five" in New York.
A meeting of experts from the "nuclear five" countries is planned in New York during the Review Conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). This was stated on April 25 by the head of the Russian delegation at the conference, Ambassador-at-large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Andrei Belousov.
"The relevant coordination is underway, but has not yet been completed," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to the diplomat, the treaty review conferences are a natural platform for contacts between the five nuclear powers.
The Eleventh NPT Review Conference will be held in New York from April 27 to May 22. The "Nuclear Five" is an informal association of States with nuclear weapons. It includes Russia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and France.
On April 24, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to NATO's statements about Russia's alleged violation of the NPT regime with the saying "a thief's hat is on fire." Zakharova recalled that NATO countries regularly accuse Russia of allegedly irresponsible nuclear rhetoric. However, the diplomat stressed that no examples of such an approach can be found in any speeches by Russian President Vladimir Putin, representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry or the Ministry of Defense.
