More than 30 sloths, imported from Guyana and Peru, died in the United States due to inadequate conditions of detention. This was reported on April 24 by NBC News, citing sources.

"According to a recent report by the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), 31 deaths occurred between December 2024 and February 2025," the publication says.

The warehouse where the sloths were housed was not prepared for the cold weather. There was no water supply or electricity in the building.

Hypothermia was the cause of death of 21 sloths from Guyana. Eight more animals died of exhaustion. Two individuals from Peru did not survive transportation.

The New York Post reported on April 11 that California authorities fear that the sudden appearance of nine-kilogram nutria, which were considered exterminated, may be directly related to humans. Nutria were bred all over the world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the fur trade, but after declining demand, the rodents were released into the wild. At the end of the last century, nutria was completely eliminated in California. However, in 2017, they reappeared in the state.
