Former NATO Secretary General urges EU to rethink security framework
The European Union (EU) should fundamentally rethink its security framework in the face of changes in the global system. This was announced on April 23 by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
"When I participated in the European Council from 2001 to 2009, the world was fundamentally different. Russia was still a partner of the G8. America was an unequivocal ally. We had our own crises, but also a space for discussion. This world doesn't exist anymore," he told Politico.
Rasmussen stressed that the old methods of decision-making in Europe "are not suitable." He also proposed the creation of the European Security Council, a high—level body with a mandate to make defense decisions, including strengthening the powers of the European Commission (EC).
According to the former Secretary General of the alliance, European countries often fail to agree on a common statement while rapidly developing events are taking place in the world, she added."Газета.Ru ".
In January, Russia's permanent representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Dmitry Polyansky said that the European security system was deteriorating, and the whole world was approaching a military catastrophe. Polyansky also stressed that in Europe today, instead of readiness for analysis, the logic of military escalation prevails.
Shortly after that, on February 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed the opinion that NATO, the EU and the OSCE had no prospects and were becoming a thing of the past. At the same time, he also noted the increased interest in the initiative of the Russian Federation to create a Eurasian security structure in which all countries of the continent would participate.
